Industrial-Scale Manufacturing

Challenges We’re Addressing

The solvothermal method is known as a general PCP/MOF synthesis method on a laboratory scale.

PCP/MOF is composed of metal salts and organic materials (ligand), and crystals will not form unless these materials are brought into proper contact.

However, since metal salts and organics often have very different solubilities in certain solvents, at least one of the substances must be dissolved in a poor solvent.

As a result, the reaction system must be subjected to high temperature and pressure.

The solvothermal method can be handled at the laboratory level by using an autoclave, but mass production at plants and other facilities involves significant hurdles in terms of legal regulations and safety.

In addition, as mentioned above, the solvothermal method is a poor solvent system for either of the raw materials, so the reaction can be carried out only at very low concentrations, and there are also major issues with batch efficiency.

Thus, due to the issues in the solvothermal method in terms of facilities and batch efficiency, the production of PCP/MOF has been considered to be unrealistically costly.

In order to solve the problems of the solvothermal method, the solid-phase synthesis method, which does not use solvents, is also being considered.

Although the solid-phase synthesis method is expected to significantly improve batch efficiency, it is difficult to achieve uniform contact between raw materials, and there are issues in stabilizing quality. In addition, this method can only be applied to some PCP/MOF, limiting its versatility, so further study is needed before it can be widely used.

Our Technologies

PCP/MOF is attracting attention as a novel material, and numerous structures have been reported in academic papers.

The source of Atomis’ competitiveness as a supplier is how to establish a supply system for such a wide variety of PCP/MOF for practical use.

Atomis has developed several proprietary manufacturing methods to overcome the challenges of the solvothermal method, which is a liquid-phase synthesis method, and the solid-phase synthesis method, and possesses a large amount of know-how and intellectual property.

They enable synthesis under mild conditions and are not restricted by high-pressure-related laws and regulations, and their improved batch efficiency makes it possible to produce PCP/MOF at a practical cost.

In addition, with the aim of mass-producing PCP/MOF using our proprietary manufacturing method, we have completed construction of a pilot plant as our own facility in 2023.

This facility is an explosion-proof plant that can handle a wide range of manufacturing conditions and has a maximum annual production capacity of 20 tons.

It is one of the world’s largest dedicated manufacturing facilities, and has the supply system in place to contribute to the social implementation of PCP/MOF.

In the future, even if the scale of production exceeds a certain level, there is room to expand our own production capacity, and in addition, we are considering not only in-house production but also collaboration with partner companies.

The strength of our company lies in the fact that we have established a stable supply system and technological superiority to promote the practical application of our products.

Ensuring mass production is essential for the adoption of materials.
